Data Center Chief Engineer

Our client’s company is a reliable provider of colocation and connectivity services with the best and most sustainable digital solutions. The initial location is Germany with 10 distributed Edge data centers, followed by other data centers in the Netherlands, UK, Belgium, Spain, France, Portugal, Ireland and Switzerland. Currently they have 30+ edge locations.

The data centers will also be integrated into a future-oriented energy infrastructure, which will contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions in the generation, heating, and gas sectors through sector coupling. Thus, the function of data centers in Europe as an innovative lever for reducing coal and a stabilizing part of green energy infrastructure is being redefined from the ground up.

We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented individual to join Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This dedicated team works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports the data centers. Specifically, this team ensures that the data center’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems operate at 100% availability while providing first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.

The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency. This includes planned preventative maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues. The CE serves as an expert technical resource, interacting with onsite Site Technicians and challenging third-party vendors. They are expected to be a focal point for all facility operations and support then company within its owned and operated data centers.

The CE will direct, train, and support Site Technicians in troubleshooting and operating electrical and mechanical equipment. Implementing and executing site/equipment-specific training exercises is also expected.

This role will be based in Amsterdam area, with flexibility required to travel to other locations within the Benelux region if needed.

Function

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in multiple company’s data centers
  • Operate independently with limited direct management
  • Act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center region
  • Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures
  • Troubleshoot and report on facility and data server-level events within internal SLA
  • Create and deploy new standard practices for Site Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams
  • Provide training and guidance to Site Technicians and assist in recruiting efforts for the same
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and the company’s staff

 

Job Requirements

  • Relevant management experience within critical infrastructure, preferably in data centres
  • Ability to solve problems at their root, stepping back to understand the broader context
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting and problem-solving
  • Ability to maintain SLAs through proactive issue detection and immediate response
  • Proven experience reading SLDs and control schematics
  • Ability to follow support procedures, system documentation, and issue tracking entries into a trouble ticket system
  • Good judgment and instincts in decision making
  • Ability to prioritize in a complex, fast-paced environment
  • Ownership of technical issues brought to them by their customer base
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written) is required. Fluency in Dutch, German,or other European languages is a plus.
  • Eligible to work in the Netherlands without the need for visa sponsorship
